In the course of enforcement of various environmental protection related Acts and Rules, a large number of writ petitions are being filed by the industries against the Board. At the same time, Board also files criminal cases against erring industries who violate environmental laws and Rules.
To deal with the legal related matters there is a legal cell in the Central Office headed by a Legal Officer and assisted by 3 legal assistants. The legal section is responsible for monitoring writ petitions and cases pending before various courts and tendering opinion on various issues involving legal implications.
To conduct cases on behalf of the Board before the various courts, Appellate Authorities etc., the Board has a panel of Advocates consisting of 45 members.
Further there is a Legal Advisory Committee headed by a Chairman with two other members. This committee renders opinion/advise on all important issues involving legal implications.
