AN EXHIBITION ON ENVIRONMENT FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN

'Environment' has become one of the hot topics for discussion these days among most sections of society. Ranging from the level of primary classes to the highest academic sections, great stress is being laid on a variety of environmental issues such as conservation and management, pollution, effects of pollution on health and well being of human beings and other organisms, solutions and remedies for pollution which are all being thought of, discussed and debated world over.

Karnataka is a state gifted with a rich natural wealth of different types of ecosystems such as pristine forests, that include the dense evergreen forests of Western Ghats and the deciduous forests of Bandipur, the plains, water bodies and a Coastline rich with floral and faunal diversity and exquisite locales on the shore.

Protection, preservation and proper management of this natural wealth becomes the responsibility of every one of us.

With a view to create environmental awareness among one of the most important sections of the society namely the school children. Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has launched a novel project-the Mobile Exhibition Project.

OBJECTIVES

  • To Initiate a process of questioning, experimenting, analyzing and understanding the concepts dealing with environment.

  • To create an understanding about degradation and pollution of our environment due to various factors.

  • To  educate the children about the importance of conservation and management of environment.

  • To familiarise the children about the use of sophisticated equipments used to analyze various environmental parameters.

The entire unit has been designed in a way that the theme for all exhibits are chosen from the relevant Prescribed curriculum and thus act as guidelines for the school children in increasing their ability to understand the concepts well.

some of the most important and common environmental concepts taught in schools are;

  • Introduction to Ecology and environment

  • Forest and wildlife

  • Water

  • Renewable energy resources

  • Pollution and its effects on human health and other living organisms

Protection and conservation of resources.

The mobile exhibition is very advantageous in that, the information housed can be disseminated even to the remotest accessible areas of Karnataka.

The units may be taken to the schools or locations in the close vicinity of schools so that the school authorities can facilitate the students to see the exhibits without losing more school hours.

Easy access of the exhibition unit to more places in the same area on the same day with proper time allocation and management is an added feature.

A very interesting feature in the unit is that of the Great Pied Hornbill, one of the most colourful avion species of Karnataka named as "Chunchoo" that has been chosen as a mascot to explain the information on the panels in the form of a story.

AN EXHIBITION ON urban ENVIRONMENT

Karnataka is one of the states endowed with geographical, cultural, and ecological diversities. The beautiful climate and the bountiful resources present here attract a large number of people from all over the country and even outside. The variety of facilities available in urban areas make them unique as compared to rural areas. Presence of a number of educational institutions, medical facilities, transport and communication networks, better houses, sanitation, infrastructure and many such facilities lure people to urban areas. This has led to a gamut of problems relating to the environment like unplanned development, encroachments and pollution in urban centres of the state.

Karnataka has 27 districts with 270 towns/urban agglomerations (Census of India 2001) and the density is ever increasing with more and more people infiltrating in to cities. Bangalore city ranks first in the state in total population. The current urban population of the city is 57,45,417 (Census of India 2001).

The rapid urbanization has lead to various environmental concerns such as decrease in the quality of natural air and water, expansion of slums, improper sanitation facilities and poor living conditions in the urban centres. Thus environmental degradation in the form of over consumption of resources and pollution have become the issues for discussion. Concern for clean environment has been totally sidelined during the process of rapid urbanization and it has become the need of the hour to create awareness among urbanities for a clean and green environment.

With the main purpose of educating the urban population about the causes and effects of urbanization and its impacts on the present day environment. Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has launched a novel project the Mobile Exhibition project.

AN EXHIBITION ON ENVIRONMENT FOR INDUSTRIES

The development of a country is dependent on various parameters of which industrial development occupies a prime position. Industries help in the economic upliftment of a nation, make way for better infrastructure, and improve the socio-economic conditions of the communities. Karnataka is one of the states that have witnessed a strong industrial growth over the decades. Bangalore is considered as one of the most important industrial centers of Karnataka.

One of the most important sectors of industries is the sector of small-scale industries that cater to a large number of peoples’ needs such as agro-based products, textiles and mineral based products.

Karnataka has around 269,225 Small Scale Industries (Kaigarika Varthe 2001) that contribute around 35% to the total exports from industries, 40% to the production and creates around 45% of the total employment opportunities (Department of Commerce and Industry, Government of Karnataka).

Industrialization has brought together with it a gamut of problems. Right from the stages of raw material production and transportation to the final products, every stage is associated with some or other forms of pollution. Release of effluents, gaseous emissions, foul odors, sounds of  heavy machinery, noise due to various production processes, unhygienic working conditions are only a few of the problems witnessed by most industries in the present times.

With a view to educate industrial society about problems faced by most Small Scale Industries and solution for these problems, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has launched a novel project-the Mobile Exhibition project.

OBJECTIVES

To create awareness among Small-Scale Industries about various environmental issues relating to:

  • Efficient utilization of available resources.
